It is an amazing feeling for us to share our heritage with you. The Indian subcontinent has always astonished travellers from around the world since ages! In this edition we introduce you to the fascinating ‘Cafes that are run with a cause’ in India.

Indian cuisine is one of the most renowned in the world. During a trip to India one would definitely want to try out various cuisines on offer. Why not dining at a café which is promoting a noble cause while serving great food? A cafe running for a social cause where the experience is much more than food, thus catering to the soul and not just tummy.

Keeping in mind the prevailing inequality in the society, some people took it upon themselves to bring about a change by creating awareness against social issues plaguing our society, while serving great food. While dining at one of these cafes one might come across a life changing experience or be able to strike a conversation with someone which can prove to be life changing. But one thing that is sure to be fulfilled is the pleasure of supporting a noble cause and be able to pay back to the society.

Let us introduce you to few such cafes which support many social causes and help fight social stigma:

SHEROES HANGOUT CAFÉ, AGRA & LUCKNOW
Sheroes (She heroes) café is a brainchild of “Stop Acid Attacks Team”. Started in Agra, now the café has another branch in Lucknow. These cafes are run by women who have been victims of acid attacks, thus giving them an opportunity to lead a normal life gracefully.

Visit any of these cafes & get inspired by the strength with which these women have overcome the mental & physical agony and bounced back. Stories of these women will leave one dumbfounded. The food at the café is great as well & they have a policy of pay as you wish.

SEVA CAFÉ, BENGALURU & AHMEDABAD
A novel concept, these cafés work on the Indian belief of Atithi Devo Bhava (Guest is a God). The meals are served as a gift because they are already paid for by someone who had dined before. The check reads zero with only a foot note “Your meal was a gift from someone who came before you. To keep the chain of gifts alive, we invite you to pay it forward for those dinning after you”.

One basically pays for a stranger here. This chain keeps on going and helps to create a future that moves from transaction to trust and from self-oriented isolation to shared commitment.

CAFE TOTO, KOLKATA
A joint venture between NGO - Tomorrow’s foundation & French NGO - Life Project for youth, this is basically a restaurant plus training school for the underprivileged children like orphans, disabled, victims of domestic violence etc. Here the children are trained in enhancing their skills like learning English language, cooking skills, communication & soft skills etc.

WRITERS CAFÉ, CHENNAI
This café in Chennai provides a platform for the women who are domestically abused or victims of acid attack, to help them lead a dignified life. The women are trained in the restaurant, honing their baking, confectionary and culinary skills.

On a visit to the café, one might strike a conversation with the staff to know about their journey or simply indulge in the delightful food while reading one of the books available in the café.

MIRCHI & MIME, MUMBAI
Located in the city of Mumbai, this is another joint with a social cause. The restaurant is helping hearing & speech impaired people in transforming their lives. In this restaurant the communication is done by gestures attached to the menu. The system of gestures is easy for the diners and servers to communicate and understand. The restaurant serves some excellent modern Indian food. Watch a short video on the place.

TASTE OF DARKNESS, HYDERABAD
This unique dining experience in Hyderabad may become a memory for the diners forever. When one enters the restaurant which is completely dark, one is able to experience the challenges which the visually impaired have to face in this world. Most of staff members here are visually impaired, however it is interesting to see how they perform all the functions including taking orders to delivering food with perfection. The menu here is pre plated & one needs to choose between a vegetarian and a non vegetarian food. It is a must have experience with a social impact message as a take away.

CAFÉ POSITIVE, KOLKATA
Café positive is first of its kind café run by HIV positive men & women. The motto behind this café is to change the negative attitude of the general society and work towards the welfare of HIV positive people by giving them a chance of employment and better acceptability in the society. The place is run by the teenagers most of whom were abandoned by their families on learning that they were HIV-positive.

This experiment has been well appreciated & has given an opportunity to the people working here to be an integral part of the society. Visit the café & enjoy awesome coffee & cakes prepared by the staff.

ECHOES CAFÉ, DELHI
This café in Delhi employs deaf and mute staff. The communication at the café is facilitated with the help of light bulbs much like those in the aircrafts, notepads for the customers to write their orders & sign language.

The staff is well trained to give a seamless experience to the diners. Do visit the café for a delectable food & get energized by the hard work & dedication of the staff.
