SPITI – THE HIDDEN JEWEL OF HIMALAYAS

Read. Imagine. Travel.

Namaste! There is no denying the fact that the current pandemic has changed our world and it is bit unfortunate that the emergence of the new variant has once again delayed the recovery of tourism. But we remain optimistic that soon we will be able to put behind the scare of new Covid-19 variant and travel can resume with ease.

In tune to the visible trends and subsequent shift of focus of a discerning traveler (especially due the pandemic) towards nature friendly and lesser crowded offbeat places, here we are with another edition introducing the fascinating ‘SPITI VALLEY – THE HIDDEN JEWEL OF HIMALAYAS’, in India.

Snuggled in Himachal Pradesh in the Indian Himalayas, Spiti Valley is a picturesque paradise echoing with tranquility and spirituality. Home to several ancient Buddhist monasteries, small hamlets, clear rivers and unexplored natural sites, the valley boasts of a lush, barren and emerald landscape. Spiti literally translates to “the middle land”, that is the land between India & Tibet. The Lahaul and Spiti district that comprises both the valleys i.e. Lahaul and Spiti are connected though Kunzum pass (Kunzum la). Rudyard Kipling in his book “Kim” has described this area as “A world within a world”.

While traversing through this area, one will come across beautiful landscapes, changing elevations, barren lands, spectacular rivers & pristine lakes. Since there is no airport in this area (which is probably the reason that this place is still obscure), Spiti is best reached via Shimla (capital of Himachal Pradesh), continuing on to Sarahan, Kinnaur (visting Sangla valley & Chitkul – the beautiful and last village on India-China border) before finally reaching the Spiti Valley.

Get ready to explore this area with us. The roads might be a little rough but are not rough enough to keep one away from this paradise on earth:

GET MESMERIZED BY THE BEAUTY OF MONASTERY AT TABO
Tabo monastery is a 1000 year old functional gompa. It is the oldest earthen Buddhist monastery in the Himalayan region to have survived and comprises of 9 temples made out of mud, 23 chortens, a monk chamber and a chamber for the nuns. All the buildings here are encompassed within high mud walls which gel beautifully with the surroundings.

Appreciate the beauty of the murals & paintings on the walls of these mud structures, which are comparable to the UNESCO world heritage site of Ajanta caves in Aurangabad (near Mumbai) thus earning it an epithet of ‘Ajanta of Himalayas’.

VISIT THE MUMMY AT GIU
This 500 year old Mummy at Giu (near Tabo) will surely leave one astounded. This mummy is believed to be of a 15th century Buddhist Monk, Sangha Tenzin. It can still be seen in a meditating posture, with a rosary in its hand, and its nails, teeth and hair intact.

The mummy was discovered in 1975 when the stupa, in which this mummy was kept, was destroyed by an earthquake. This mummy seems to possess so much of life that at a quick glance it seems that the mummy will wake up & start walking.

DHANKAR
Located between Tabo & Kaza, this village is known for its monastery that magically clings to a cliff. Dhankar literally translates to “fort” and the monastery here acted as a seat of governance for the local rulers.

Visit & admire the engineering skills of people who had built this strong structure.

Consisting of a number of multistoried buildings perched together, the monastery gets a fortress like look. Though each of the five halls in the monastery including Kanjur, Lhakhang are worth visiting, the most impressive is Dukhang where a life size silver statue of Vajradhara is kept in a glass altar embellished with scarves and flowers. One should not miss to visit Lha-O-pa gompa which is the small chapel on the uppermost peak located above the main monastery i.e. Lhakhang Gongma.
